Observation Narrative
Brannon Branch lies at base of the slope along Rt. 638, 0.4 mi north of junction with Rt. 624. This stream probably helps to maintain the steep slope and fertile soil condition. This rich mesic forest is unusual in that it lacks many of the characteristic rich soil plants such as Caulophyllum, Allium tricoccum, Dicentra spp., Uvularia grandiflora, etc. Surprisingly no sugar maple here. Bedrock is blackish color and probably base rich. Cover of woody species estimated as if leaves were present and fully expanded.
Quercus rubra measured at ca. 35 cm dbh.
